Tesla’s attempt to create the weirdest PC case ever – that is, to build an entire car based on a computer – is now dead. As it stands, the Tesla X and S models will no longer have Steam integration, rendering them virtually useless.

Launched in December 2022, the car’s integration with Steam allowed drivers to play games – for a while actually behind the wheel, though a US government investigation into such “innovation” for drivers led to the feature being disabled, which can now only be used when you’re parked or recharging your Tesla. Still, the idea of a car equipped with a simple gaming PC is the sort of fun, speculative-futuristic addition that Tesla is basing its entire image on.

All Model X and Model S owners have received a message that their car no longer supports Steam games, but all other functionality remains unchanged. A similar message also came to those who are still waiting for their car to be delivered.

Much of the built-in PC functionality has become niche, to say the least – and if you want to play games in your car while you wait for the kids to get home from school, you can just use a laptop or Steam Deck. The cost of such a car is way overpriced when there are reasonable alternatives, which anyone with the money to buy a Tesla with a gaming PC probably already has.

It could also be related to an “unpatched” vulnerability in AMD chips that allowed Tesla users last year to access all the pay-to-win features in those models.
